Laos Library Project
We are partnering with friends who run a Life Center in Laos. The center teaches children English and Chinese, but also provides a safe place for students to spend their days when they are not in school. In Laos children take turns going to school since there are not enough teachers or rooms for all of them. For example, the 1st graders might go to school on Monday and Wednesday mornings and Friday afternoons while the 2nd graders might go Monday and Wednesday afternoons and Friday mornings. The Life Center provides a place for children to go when they are not in school during the day. They are fed, helped with their school work, and have structured recreation time. They are also taught skills which will help them get jobs when they finish school. Learning English or Chinese as well as a skill helps these children in the future find careers in tourism or other skilled labor. These children are at high risk for human trafficking, so the language and life skills will help them to find careers and stay out of the sex trade. The Life Center also employs several local adults which contributes to the local economy and helps many families become self-sustaining.
The Life Center is an amazing resource for the community, but is in need of a library. Books are scarce in this area and are rarely accessible to the at risk children the life center helps. The Life Center has a room ready, but is need of books in English, Chinese, and Lao. They are also in need of an automated system to assist with book inventory and checkout. As a school librarian, I have the skills needed to create a library in the Life Center, including setting up on an automated system and training the staff in using it.
We are raising funds to purchase around 500 books as well as supplies to get the library started. In addition, we are raising funds to send myself and a team that will setup the library and the library checkout system.
If you would like to contribute you can scan the QR code below to use Venmo. Please comment that your gift is for the Laos Library Project. Any amount will help! A new library bound book costs around $20. You can Venmo me or contribute through our PayPal Fundraiser: https://www.paypal.com/pools/c/92XJcPHyMx
